JAG Legacy Cup- 28 & 29 April 2007, Cape Town

JAG Sports and Education Foundation and Pro-active Living joined forces in putting together a new football initiative for the Western Cape called the JAG Legacy Challenge. The JAG Legacy Challenge, proudly sponsored by the JAG Sports and Education Foundation, acts as a selection tournament to a greater initiative to be known as the Cape Legacy Cup, which is designed to raise the profile of football in the Western Cape and offer amateur and semi-professional footballers from the area the opportunity to display their skills against some of South Africa’s top Premier Soccer League (PSL) teams, and potentially host international teams in the future.

The tournament was held at the Reddam House sports fields in Greenpoint on the 28th and 29th of April. In the final Kuils River succumbed to the Ekasi Eleven 3-0.

A squad of 26 players, including two U19 players, was selected to represent the Legacy All Stars team. The squad will undergo 6 weeks of Life skills training facilitated by Macsteel Maestros at the Sports Science Institute in Cape Town, and each player will be profiled in the media. A team will then be selected from the squad to play in a tournament against three of South Africa’s top PSL teams – still to be announced – at the Newlands Stadium on the 15th July 2007 in front of a mass audience.

The objectives of this initiative leading up to 2010 are to:

• Mobilize grassroots communities in a positive way
•Highlight football talent in the Western Cape communities
•Raise the profiles of talented young players
•Unite the communities of the Western Cape through football
•Create a Match Day culture for football in the Western Cape
•Bring to light the destitute communities and clubs that these players come from.

Proudly Manenberg – 15 April 2007, Cape Town

On Sunday 15 April 2007 JAG Foundation sponsored the Proudly Manenberg OutReach Day at the St. Augustine’s Cricket Club. The event run from 9am till 2pm and brought smiles to a number of children as well as the JAG members who ended up competing against eachother in a game of cricket.

The event was a part of St Augustine’s commitment towards reaching out to working class communities who do not have the necessary cricket resources and facilities. St. Augustine’s has a longstanding and rich relationship with Manenberg especially in relation to its former Western Province Cricket Board President Hassan Howa who worked tirelessly with the St. Augustine Cricket Club and in particular its former President and Deputy to Howa at the time, Paul Saville, in establishing cricket in Manenberg.

The event came at a time when Manenberg is engaged in a process of transformation and Proudly Manenberg welcomes St. Augustine’s willingness to contribute towards building a new Manenberg through sport.

The parties hope that this initiative will become an annual event which will rotate from community to community and will contribute towards building cricket and sport as an alternative to social decay and also to perpetuate non-racialism between communities.

The details of the event included:

*Six-a-Side cricket matches between teams from Manenberg, Gugulethu, Bishop Lavis, Bonteheuwel, Khayelitsha, Mandalay and Mitchells Plain

*Mini-cricket tournament for youth of the areas identified above

*Western Province Cricket Association provided specialized coaching by Cobras players.

Khulani Soccer – 21 March 2007, Muizenberg, Cape Town

Celebrating Human Rights Day – Wednesday 21 March – Sunrise Beach Muizenberg was the venue for the 3rd annual Khulani Beach Soccer Festival, supported this year by JAG Sport and Education Foundation – where once again Sporting Chance facilitated 320 children from Cape Town communities playing the beautiful game.

Khulani (meaning ‘to grow and prosper’) had children between the ages of 10 and 12 transported to the beach, divided into teams of 8 according to age and assigned a coach and sent out to play on the demarcated pitches along the shoreline.

Taking honours in the under 10 age group were “Brazil” from Langa, and another Langa team, “Langa United”, took the title in the under 11 age group. The “senior” winners of the Khulani Beach Soccer Festival 2007, in the under 12 age group, were “Man United” from Khayelitsha!

Once the day’s play was over – the children gathered for a final vibe session and the prize giving, where they were given a talk on safety and security, as well as HIV/AIDS information. As they departed, they were given lunch and a goodie bag – taking home with them memories of sand sliding tackles, striking goals, and loads of fun in the warm South African sun!

This was the 3rd Khulani Soccer event organized by the Sporting Chance and the success of this event is leading towards this festival being expanded to include other regions of South Africa.

‘For the sake of our lives’ Campaign – 26 February 2007 – 09 March 2007

‘For the sake of our lives’ Campaign – 26 February 2007 – 09 March 2007 at various locations within Cape Town

As a separate project we also supported the campaign “FOR THE SAKE OF OUR LIVES!” in conjunction with the Department of Education, Western Cape Education MEC Cameron Dugmore, SA 1,500m record holder Johan Landsman and about 30 learners. For 2 weeks from 26 February to 09 March 2007 we ran from school to school starting at Modderdam through Langa, Athlone to Khayelitsha. We passed a symbolic baton of peace and friendship on to fellow pupils at every school we visited. The run started from 07h00 from the schools and was an occasion of camaraderie every day we passed on messages of hope and inspiration to the young learners and encouraged them to play sport and to have a healthy body and mind.

“This campaign uses sport as a vehicle for community development, as sport goes hand in hand with safety and security, health, education, nutrition and other related issues,” commented Elana Meyer, the Executive Director of JAG Sports and Education Foundation. view images

Khayamandi Running Clinic – 16 February 2007, Stellenbosch

50 runners from Khayamandi took part in a running clinic conducted by Elana Meyer and Tegla Loroupe.

Tegla Loroupe was received with open hands and hearts. She talked to the kids, ran with them and patiently answered all the questions. She left with the promise that she will return.

Tegla Loroupe’s visit to Khayamandi was an absolute highlight. The kids loved the interaction with Tegla and were fascinated to hear from all her Sporting performances. She told them stories about Kenya and her background and filled the young children with hope and inspiration. Then we moved over to action and Tegla ran with the kids around their field.
They were all sad when it was time for her to leave, but she promised that she will be back in April.

Every week the JAG Khayamandi runners meet on a Monday, Wednesday and
Thursday and train for an hour.

The event was sponsored by the JAG Sports and Education Foundation and commenced the cycle of Khayamandi running clinics. The children participants were each given a T-shirt after regular participation in the training clinic sessions held since the beginning of January 2007. view images
