New rugby institute throws rugby players a lifeline

Twenty six young rugby players of Boland Rugby will be able to pursue their dreams thanks to a new partnership between a Cape Town based financial investment company and the Boland Rugby Union.

Twenty of the twenty six players were previously training at Alan Zondagh’s Rugby Performance Centre (RPC) which was closed down when Fidentia was placed under curatorship, and subsequent their dreams to become professional sportsmen were shattered.

Says Greg James, founder of the JAG Investment Group, “When we heard about the closure of the RPC, we contacted Alan Zondagh to see how we could assist them. With our sports foundation, JAG is committed to providing opportunities through sport and we wanted to ensure these players had the opportunity to pursue their goals following the unfortunate circumstances.”

James says that Zondagh put him in touch with former Springbok flyhalf Louis Koen and ex-South Africa A scrumhalf, Christoff Lotter, who needed a sponsor to set up a rugby institute for the u/19 and u/21 Boland Rugby sides, based in Wellington. As James already agreed with Zondagh to assist 20 players from the RPC, for whom greener pastures could not be sourced, he decided that the best way forward would be to incorporate these players into the institute and sponsor it as a whole.

“After meeting with Louis, Christoff and the Boland Rugby Union, we are delighted to have formed an alliance supporting them to provide the best possible training to the players. The new organisation will be called the JAG Boland Rugby Institute and will make use of the Boland Rugby Union’s facilities,” says James.

Jack Abrahams, President of the Boland Rugby Union says, “We appreciate the assistance from JAG to help turn these young players’ dreams into realities. We can now offer the resources to give young players the best chance to fulfil their potential.”
