Western Province amateur cricket received a huge boost last night when the JAG Investment Group announced a sponsorship of R5 million to be spread over the next five years.
It will come as a big relief to the Western Province Cricket Association who have by far the most amateur club and youth players in the country ( approximately 40 000), but have to get by on the same financial allocation that Cricket South Africa makes to other provinces.
At the moment the costs of running amateur cricket in the Western Province plus the Cape Cobras franchise and the Newlands ground amount to approximately R30 million per year.
In announcing the sponsorship, JAG managing director Greg James said that the deal fitted in very well with the company’s sports and education foundation. “We are passionate about socio-economic upliftment and I believe sport is invaluable in achieving this goal,” he said.
