Sport heroes talk to kids

A HEALTHY mind in a healthy body- that’s what the JAG Sports and Education Foundation aims to achieve.

The foundation was launched in the Eastern Cape last week.Top South African athlete Elana Meyer, former springbok rugby star Robbie Fleck and one-time inmate-turned motivational speaker, Gayton McKenzie, all took part in the three day event.

Meyer heads the Mighty Metres running programme, which she launched at the President Primary School East London. Mighty metres is an easy –to-implement option for schools that don’t have a Physical Education programme.
She told Daily Sun: “Doing regular exercise keeps children healthy and gives them a sense of purpose.

“We have been setting up this programme over the past six months and I am thrilled that is now underway.”

Rugby great Fleck held a brief coaching clinic at Newlands Location. “It seems a far cry from the Newlands where I used to play my rugby,” he said.

The inspirational McKenzie spoke about his experiences to various school kids. He told them the truth about the dangers of drugs and said young people should rather turn to sport.

He told the Daily Sun: “A healthy body leads to a healthy mind, a healthy life and a healthy society.”

Greg James, founder of the foundation ,agreed. “Getting young people involved in sports from an early age provides them with a sense of pride in themselves,” he said
