Students of Hillwood Primary School in Lavender Hill enjoyed a brisk run around their playground on 24 May as a part of the newly launched Mighty Metres programme, headed by former South African athlete half marathon runner Elana Meyer, on behalf of JAG Sports and Education Foundation.
Since physical education lessons are no longer a part of the curriculum at many schools in the province, the programme aims to address the state of children’s health and is endorsed by the Western Cape Education programme. The launch at the school was attended by Meyer as well as Education MEC Cameron Dugmore, and the children enjoyed the first of many running sessions on the playground during school hours.
